Rookie Lifeguard Programme
The YLSC Rookie Lifeguard sessions are held on a Thursday evening between 7.30pm and 9pm and are for children aged between 9 and 12 -13 years. Rookies are taught to be aware of how to take better care of themselves, their family and friends, and give them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities. The awards contain survival, rescue and sports skills, as well as Life Support, First Aid skills and water safety elements. Classes are taught by our volunteer Rookie Instructors and are based around the syllabus of the RLSS UK Rookie Lifeguard programme.
The RLSS UK Rookie Lifeguard programme allows candidates to develop their lifesaving skills over 3 levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level comprises of 3 stages allowing candidates to progress upwards, building on their skills and providing new and challenging activities to reinforce water safety and basic rescue techniques. The scheme can be started at any level and each activity is signed off by the Rookie Instructor when the participant has shown successfully they can complete it. Once complete, members are awarded the certificate and badge at our annual Awards Evening.
Bronze Level - Bronze level introduces basic lifesaving skills, rescue principles and helps built confidence amongst the candidates. Activities at this level include entering and exiting the water safely, treading water, identification of the different types of casualties, basic land based rescues and a wade in rescue.
Silver Level - Silver level builds on the skills developed during Bronze and introduces some more complex rescue techniques. It also increases the challenge to participants by slightly decreasing the time limits on certain activities and pushing them a little further.
Gold Level - Gold level introduces further rescue techniques and increases the challenge by reducing time limits and increases swimming and towing distances. The Rookie Life Support award is also taught at this level.
